Why Contributing Matters – Like Watering a Public Garden

Have you ever walked through a neighborhood public garden and noticed it thriving? Not because of a formal gardener, but because people quietly care for it much like why contributing matters to open source.

Someone waters the plants. Another picks up trash. No spotlight and just simple acts of ownership, love and care to nurture the nature!

Contribution often looks like this — quiet, consistent, and impactful.

This is exactly how I’ve come to see open source contribution.

Contribution is More Than Just Code

When we talk about contributing to WordPress or any open source project, code usually takes the spotlight. But the truth is:

You don’t need to write code to make a meaningful contribution.

Apart from coding, open source flourishes because of contributions on all the following areas:

  • Test releases and report bugs
  • Translate content into local languages
  • Improve accessibility
  • Write or edit/update documentation
  • Mentor new contributors
  • Share feedback
  • Organize or volunteer at community events

Each of these efforts is like watering a patch in a shared public garden. The garden doesn’t thrive because of one person. It thrives because many people show up in different ways, at different times, with different strengths. 💪

Don’t Just Pick the Flowers

We often use and benefit from open source plugins, themes, docs, support forums without ever realizing where they came from. That’s okay at first. But over time, it’s like walking into a garden, picking the best flowers, walking away and never once stopping to pour water on the soil.

When we take and never give back, the garden dries up.
But when we give even just a little; it grows for everyone. 🌱

Giving back doesn’t require grand gestures. It starts with one thoughtful action.

Why Contributing Matters: It Builds More Than Just Projects

Contribution builds character, community as connects you to people across cultures and continents. It helps you try new things, fail safely, and grow continuously. Most importantly, it reminds you that your efforts make a difference.

And it reminds us that we’re part of something bigger.

If you’re still wondering why contributing matters, it’s because it connects us to a global mission.

Curious Where I Started?

I began with small test reports, joining online meetings, and slowly taking on more. Today, I’m a proud contributor across different releases, meetup, and WordCamps. Explore My WordPress Contribution History and maybe it will help you find your own starting point.
